Reflexology: A Wonderful Tool

Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, relaxing and non-invasive therapy that aims to achieve complete good health for the body and mind. Alongside medical care reflexology can help improve quality of life and bring comfort to those living with certain chronic conditions.

Reflexology helps to bring about a state of deep relaxation, stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself and return a person to a state of natural balance and well-being.

Reflexology is a wonderful therapy whether you want to relieve a certain condition, receive a relaxing treatment or just try something new.

You do not need to be ill to benefit and enjoy a reflexology treatment. Everyone needs time to relax and a reflexology treatment leaves you feeling calm, refreshed and revitalized.

Benefits of reflexology include:

  • Reduces stress and tension
  • Induce deep relaxation and feeling of wellbeing
  • Improves mood
  • Aids sleep

About Claire

My first introduction to complementary therapies was many years ago as a child when my mother began her aromatherapy training. We grew up knowing that if we had a sore throat it was the big toe we reached for, not a packet of lozenges!

I qualified as a reflexologist from the Central London School of Reflexology in 2001, and set up a practice in London. I returned to Somerset with my family in 2002 and now work in Taunton and West Somerset areas with my practice based in Milverton. I am a full member of the Association of Reflexologists and am governed by their Code of Practice and Ethics. I undertake Continuing Professional Development which keeps me up to date in my practice and also enhances my reflexology treatments.

Since qualifying I have completed further training in:

  • Baby Reflexology
  • Head Massage
  • Nerve Reflexology
  • Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT)

I promote the use of Reflexology as a preventative measure, and that regular treatments are important to maintain our bodies through our ever chaotic and often stressful lives. Sorting out problems before they occur makes more sense than waiting for a problem to manifest itself. I have a Reflexology treatment myself every month and I no longer suffer from as many tension headaches or digestive imbalances.

Treatments

  • Baby Reflexology

    Baby Reflexology

Baby Reflexology is reflexology specially designed for babies from one month old.

It is aimed at teaching parents reflexology techniques to use on their own babies. The techniques are simple to learn, and may help to ease, relieve and eliminate many baby discomforts. Babies naturally love to be touched and this wonderful treatment helps parents bond with their babies, whilst giving them the benefit of a gentle, safe, non-invasive, natural therapy. It is proving to be very popular and successful with parents. As for the babies, they relax and fall asleep – in fact, they love it!

    Baby Reflexology aims to:

    • Encourage and develop bonding between parent and baby
    • Be relaxing and calming, therefore promoting sleep
    • Support the body’s defences against infections
    • Support and aid digestion. Helps keep babies regular!
    • Help with pain relief, e.g. teething

  • Baby Reflexology Course

    Baby Reflexology Course

A Baby Reflexology course consists of three sessions, each lasting about an hour, once a week for three weeks.

These are taught in small, friendly, informal groups of up to 6 parents, or on a one-to-one basis. They are either taught in your own home or at a baby group, which is ideal for post-natal groups. The workshops are themed so that parents are taught the techniques in bite-size chunks, allowing them to absorb the information in easily remembered sessions. The themes are:

    • Feeding and digestion – shows the reflexes that may help relieve colic, wind, constipation and reflux
    • Sleeping and comforting – concentrates on calming the baby and helping him/her to sleep.
    • Wellbeing – illustrates the reflexes that may help with teething and cold relief.

  • For All Ages

    Reflexology & Older People

Reflexology is increasingly being used in residential care facilities and among many fit older clients who want to retain their health throughout their retirement.

Reflexology is particularly suited for older people as it helps relaxation, improves mood, aids sleep, helps to relieve tension and improves sense of wellbeing.

Reflexology is a very practical and accessible therapy for older people as no outer clothing, except footwear, needs to be removed. The techniques can be applied in a standing, sitting or reclining position, and in many locations – in a chair, in bed or in a wheel chair. Reflexology can also be carried out on the hands, with exactly the same benefits, if they are preferred or more easily accessible.

    Reflexology for Children and Teens

Reflexology is just as effective on children as on adults. Like most adults, children love reflexology.

It calms and relaxes them; it helps them with the fears, joys, bewilderment and excitement which are all part of growing up. Reflexology helps to stimulate your child’s natural healing processes. As with adults, regular treatments may boost the immune system and help prevent illness, or speed up the recovery process. Children’s treatments are shorter than those of adults as they are usually quicker to respond.

  • Nerve Reflexology

    Nerve Reflexology

Nerve Reflexology can be used to provide fast and effective relief from pain.

This method of reflexology uses nerve reflex points on the various foot bones. By pressing these points there is a precise impact on various parts of the nervous system. This changes the pain process in the nervous system to bring relief from acute and chronic pain. Nerve Reflexology benefits those with pain issues due to reduced or excessive action of muscles, joints, organs and other structures.

  • VRT

    Vertical Reflex Therapy

Vertical Reflex Therapy can be combined with the classic reflexology treatment at the start and/or the end of a treatment. It is carried out on the tops and sides of the feet whilst the client is standing.

When the body is weight-bearing, the nerves in the hands and feet become sensitised and this appears to boost the response of the stimulated reflex. It seems that Vertical Reflex Therapy helps accelerate the healing process. Vertical Reflex Therapy was developed by Lynne Booth and is now taught and practiced all over the world.

  • Head Massage

    Head Massage

Head massage is a relaxing treatment which concentrates on massaging the neck and shoulders, as well as the head. The client sits fully clothed on a chair for the treatment.

Head massage helps improve blood flow to the neck and shoulders which increases joint mobility and flexibility. It improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow. It is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension. Head massage releases toxins from the body, and enhances a feeling of well-being and relaxation, leaving the client feeling energised, revitalized and able to concentrate better.

The session lasts for about 30 minutes.

Head massage has many benefits and may help:

    • Muscular tension
    • Headaches
    • Sleep disorders
    • Anxiety and stress
    • Pain relief
    • Scalp tension
    • Mental tiredness
    • Breathing disorders
